About the Magazine

The Crier is a new kind of magazine—smart, but not pretentious; timely and savvy, but not precious. Founded in summer 2006, its unconventional mix of art and culture, travel, science, and leisure make it a magazine you’ll want to read to the very last page. In the past, we’ve featured original reporting from New York’s High Line project, the Texas-Mexico border and La Paz, Bolivia, where a group of female wrestlers struggle against an exploitative manager. Our critics and essayists have scratched their heads over Ray Kurzweil and his theory of the Singularity; forgotten southern sermons; artist Mark Leckey and New Age maestro Vangelis. Each of our issues—four per year—begins with The Quarterly Report, a collection of short items organized around a theme.

Beautifully designed by Mike Perry, each issue is an especially fine addition to coffee tables, bookshelves, bathroom magazine racks, bedside tables, knapsacks, and both man- and lady-purses. Six inches wide and nine inches tall, The Crier is too large to fit in your back pocket, yet petite enough to read on the train. It’s a small magazine of big ideas.
